DescriptionNew Jersey's freshwater and tidal wetland regulations today prohibit most infilling and development of mapped wetlands. This document reports on a preliminary analysis of existing and draft spatial data to approximate how much wetland area was directly impacted by recent development and how much of neighboring wetland buffer area may have been impacted. The report describes the methods and reports the results of preliminary analyses of these data. Results show patterns of temporal and spatial distribution of the impacts of development. The data also allow for a preliminary examination of the impacts and potential impacts on different types of wetlands. These preliminary results suggest a broad finding for New Jersey: For every acre of wetlands that are destroyed directly by conversion to an urban landuse, approximately 5 acres are exposed to potential degradation or loss due to their proximity to new development.
