DescriptionThese charts, published annually, are graphic representations of the classification regulations which delineate shellfish growing waters in New Jersey. These classifications result from surveys conducted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's (NJDEP) Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring, in accordance with the Food and Drug Administration as well as the National Shellfish Sanitation Program guidelines and regulations. Waters are characterized and depicted in one of four ways: approved (approved for year-round harvest of shellfish, i.e. oysters, clams, and mussel); seasonal (approved for harvest of shellfish only during a specified "season" of the year, e.g. November-April); special restricted (waters are moderately polluted and harvesting is only permitted with further purification prior to consumption); and prohibited (waters are condemned for the year-round harvst of shellfish). Additional information contained in each year's chart package includes a summary of the changes in water classifications and harvest regulations, as well as other general information that is important for anyone interested in harvesting shellfish in New Jersey.
