DescriptionThis report compiles summarize key results of five research projects funded through New York Sea Grant’s Hard Clam Research Initiative (HCRI) between 1999 and 2008. It presents research to improve science-based understanding of the factors controlling hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria, populations in Long Island, New York’s south shore estuaries, and thereby contribute towards better management and potential enhancement of a once highly productive regional resource. Topics include: impact of fishing; reproduction; trophic interactions between hard clams and the natural phytoplankton; copepod-hard clam grazing interactions; and potential impacts of climate change. Particular emphasis is given in this synthesis to findings that have direct implications for management of these populations.
