DescriptionDuring this report period, the council continued to focus on the division's financial problems stemming from the inflationary spiral. The council directed special attention to the wild turkey program, deer management, state fish and wildlife management areas, hunter education, tiger muskie program, freshwater striped bass project, and construction of the Pequest fish hatchery and education center. The council paid particular heed to the ongoing Title 23 revision and to the law enforcement unit in regard to workmen's compensation for the deputy conservation officers.
The members participated in State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs activities, National Hunting and Fishing Day, National Wildlife Week, and various conferences and meetings.
The council worked with and received the cooperation of many agencies and individuals whose
policies and programs affect the state's fisheries and wildlife resources. Among these were the federal
government, the Governor's office, the Commissioner's staff, departmental units, other state agencies,
and county and municipal bodies, as well as private organizations and individuals.
During the report period Council Chairman Harry McGarrigel, Jr., and Councilman Raymond T. Richardson, both commercial fishermen representatives, left the council under provisions of the newly
created marine fisheries program legislation which established a Marine Fisheries Council separate
from the Fish and Game Council. Council members John Olsen and Richard Ryan joined the council
under provisions of the act. Commissioner English approved construction of the division's Pequest Trout Hatchery - Natural
Resources Center, and work is underway on this long-awaited facility. Status of the project is outlined
under the freshwater fisheries section of this report.
