DescriptionThis watershed plan primarily involves the reduction of sheet and rill erosion from cropland in the Navesink Watershed by installing various land treatment practices. Soil erosion, in addition to causing a deterioration of the resource base, is contributing to the degradation of water quality and quantity in a public water supply reservoir. Secondary agricultural problems exist and are caused by the improper management of animal wastes. These wastes contribute to both nutrient and bacterial levels in the watershed. Alternative plans, other than no project, involve erosion control with various degrees of agricultural waste management. Beneficial impacts include reducing 4325 acres of cropland to acceptable erosion levels, reducing nutrient and sediment levels to the water supply reservoir, and reducing bacterial levels in shellfish waters of the Navesink Estuary. Project costs are expected to be approximately $1,203,600. Local sponsors and landowners will pay approximately 42 percent ($501,000) of this cost.
NotePrepared under the Authority of the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act, Public Law 83-566, as amended (16 USC 1001-1008) and in accordance with Section 102 (2) (c) of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, Pubic Law 91-190, as amended (42 USC 4321 et seq.).
