DescriptionOne of the most important natural features of East Hanover is water. The township sits on the sole source Buried Valley Aquifer, which supplies the drinking water for thousands of people living in this dense suburban area. East Hanover is surrounded by rivers to the east, north and west, with tributaries flowing through neighborhoods, the high school and the Pinch Brook golf course. Flood plains and wetlands adjacent to these streams and brooks create natural areas of wilderness and beauty, but also restrains to residential, commercial and industrial growth, due to issues such as flooding, endangered species habitat, and hydric soils. Pressure from development has put East Hanover into the position of needing to protect its valuable water resources. Mapping areas of concern has been accomplished and compiled in this inventory along with corresponding township ordinances. These maps can be used as a planning guide, and this study as a whole is intended to be a planning tool and informational packet for those concerned about East Hanover's water resources.
