DescriptionThe effects of natural freeze/thawing on the chemical and physical characteristics of eight New Jersey water treatment residuals were investigated in relation to trace metal leaching. Field and laboratory studies indicate that leaching of metals from residuals which have undergone a freeze/thaw cycle is considerably less than raw residuals. Furthermore, freeze-thawed residuals mixed with New Jersey soils leached metals less than raw residuals mixed with soils. The freeze/thaw residuals-soil mixtures, in most cases, exhibited leaching characteristics similar to those of the soils alone.
