DescriptionChlorination of public drinking water supplies has greatly reduced serious illness and death associated with many waterborne diseases. But the presence of disinfection by-products in drinking water supplies, formed when chlorine reacts with natural organic materials in water, has raised concerns about the overall safety of chlorination. This document discusses the possible health problems from exposure to disinfection by-products, what the public can do about it, and what steps the state and federal government have taken to protect the public from the potential health risks from disinfection by-products.
