DescriptionAlthough the fish fauna of the Middle Atlantic Bight has been extensively studied, the distribution of young-of-the-year (YOY) of estuarine fishes in the Bight has not been determined. This report summarizes the seasonal (fall, winter, spring) distribution for the YOY of 27 species and compares the distribution to that of larger age 1+ juveniles and adults, based on over 16,000 tows from the National Marine Fisheries Service groundfish surveys during 1982-2003. Species selection was based on those species that occur in estuaries during the first few months of life. In general, most species have relatively defined seasonal patterns, with many emigrating from summer habitats in estuaries to the continental shelf to the south and in deeper waters for the winter, including some species move out of the Bight. Some of these species return by the following spring, while others delay their return. These extensive seasonal migrations and exchanges between the Middle Atlantic and South Atlantic bights may require a broader view, if we are to understand Essential Fish Habitats completely.
