DescriptionThe substrates/habitats in the vicinity of Beach Haven Ridge off Little Egg Inlet in southern New Jersey were surveyed during 1990-1994 to provide a characterization for future studies. This shoreface submarine sand ridge and surrounding areas are composed of complex and heterogeneous substrates based on prior sidescan sonar observations. These findings are supported by in situ observation by SCUBA, submersible and ROV transects in depths of 9-24 m during several summers. A variety of bedforms, sustrates, and biogenic features were present. The most consistent feature was megaripples on the top of the ridge. Sand was the most consistent surficial feature feature but clay and gravel outcrops also occurred. Large accumulations of surf clam valve and shell hash were also occasionally present but, apparently, not for long periods of time. Other substrates that were biological in origin include patches and mats of polychaete worms and/or amphipods but those never occurred on the top of the ridge. Some of these substrates served as habitats for juvenile fishes with most obvious associations between fishes and accumulations of surf clam valves. A related study found that most species of decapod crustaceans avoided the megaripplpe habitat on the top of the ridge.
