DescriptionThis document presents a detailed summary of the 770 page Delaware and Raritan Canal Water Quality Analysis and Assessment Report (March 1983) prepared by Rutgers University pursuant to an Agreement between Rutgers University and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The report provides an assessment of Canal water quality conditions including water column and sediment chemistry. It discusses discharges of pollutants to the Canal from point sources (wastewater) and nonpoint sources (such as urban and agricultural stormwater runoff), and inflows to the Canal from the Delaware River and other rivers and Canal tributaries. Further, the report describes options available for managing Canal water quality, discusses use of activated carbon technology for potable water treatment, and presents the conclusion that granular activated carbon (GAC) treatment could not at that time be justified for water taken from the Canal.
NotePersonnel of Rutgers University are responsible for all recommendations and conclusions in the report summarized herein. Nothing in the report or summary shall be construed as a direct or indirect endorsement of such recommendations and conclusions by the NJDEP. The initial draft of the Rutgers University report was completed before July 1981. Much of the report had not been updated since that time.
