Definition
Time Code is a parent element for one or two subelements, depending on the source type. All source types to which Time Code applies include subelement "type" to indicate the kind of timecode used. For videotape, videodisc, audiotape, andoptical disc, Time Code has a second subelement, "recordMethod". A time code is a sequence of numeric codes generated at regular intervals, typically by a timing system, for the purposes of synchronization or logging. For motion picture film, edge codes and Keykode are variations of time code which uniquely identify frames in a film stock. These are letters, numbers and symbols placed at regular intervals along the edge of 35 mm and 16 mm film to allow for frame-by-frame specific identification. [wikipedia, adapted]
