Abstract
The Botto family canned fruits and vegetables by cooking and sealing them in canning jars. They stored them in the root cellar. The Botto's also owned an icebox. Iceboxes refrigerated food to extend its freshness. Iceboxes are large wooden boxes with a tin lining. The space between the tin and wood is filled with powdered charcoal for insulation. There are three components: shelves to store food, a place for a block of ice, and a pan to catch the water as the ice melted.
