Abstract
(type = summary)
In a whole-class discussion in the third of five clips from a single session, students are asked to compare and order 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 and 1/5. David shares his solution that is based on building models with Cuisenaire rods. He sketches his model for each of the fractions on the overhead transparency. The researcher draws a line segment on the overhead transparency, marking the endpoints as 0 and 1. There is discussion among the students about the appropriate positions on the line segment as different students come forward to mark and label a point on the segment for each unit fraction noted earlier and also for 1/10.
Problem Statement: Compare and order the following fractions: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/5. On a number line segment with endpoints 0 and 1, where would you mark the position for each of these fractions? Where would you position 1/10?
