Abstract (type = summary)
This video is part of The Private Universe Project in Mathematics and includes narrative voice-over and interview with researcher, Carolyn Maher interspersed with footage of a group interview with Jeff, Michelle, Milin and Stephanie. The group interview, which lasted about an hour, occurred after students worked in the classroom on building towers of height five selecting from two colors of Unifix cubes and participated in individual interviews to discuss their thinking. Maher begins the interview by asking the 4th graders what they remembered about the problem. The students also have considered towers of different heights that can be built from two colors of cubes, and from their experiences they describe patterns that they have noticed. They use markers and paper to construct representations of towers and then use the drawings to explain their ideas. As the students share different kinds of patterns and reasoning with the group, they are asked to convince others with justifications for their solutions. Researcher Alice Alston observes the interview.
