In the second of three clips in a first grade classroom, Jeff, Milin and Jamie begin by reading problem 2. Jeff and Milin use Unifix cubes and Jamie counts out stones to model the problem. The two boys immediately state that the answer is five. Jamie says that the answer is six. The boys record 5 on their paper, and it is unclear whether Jamie agrees. Jeff then reads problem 3 and, when teacher Angela Marinaro asks for their answer, the two boys immediately say two. Ms. Marinaro asks them to reread the problem and model Jim's tennis balls with their materials. She then states that Jim has one fewer tennis ball than Don and asks how many tennis balls Don would have. Jeff says that the answer is four. Milin agrees.
Statement of problem 2:
There are 11 men in the room. There are 6 women in the room. How many fewer women are in the room?
Statement of problem 3:
Jim has 3 tennis balls. Jim has 1 fewer tennis ball than Don. How many tennis balls does Don have?
