DescriptionIn the second of nine clips in a first grade classroom, four children: Stephanie, Gerardo, Sean and Aaron, focus on the 2nd problem in a set of 6. After Stephanie reads the problem, the children use unifix cubes to model the 11 men and 6 women. After some discussion among the children, especially Stephanie and Gerardo, Researcher Alice Alston asks the group to explain what they are thinking. Stephanie holds the two rod towers together and counts up from the six. The group then agrees that the answer should be "5 fewer women". Each child records this answer and turns the page to focus on Problem 3.

There are 11 men in the room. There are 6 women in the room. How many fewer women are in the room?
