In the fourth of nine clips in a first grade classroom, four children: Stephanie, Gerardo, Sean and Aaron, are working first on Problem 5 and then on Problem 6 of a set of six word problems involving addition and subtraction. For the first of these, Researcher Alice Alston asks Stephanie to reread the problem. . The researcher also encourages the children to use the physical materials to model the problem. Without reference to the available materials, either the stones or the Unifix cubes, the children discuss whether the number of dishes that Catherine washed was the same or different from those washed by Eric. They agree that both Catherine and Eric would have washed five dishes. For Problem 6, Stephanie spontaneously uses Unifix towers to model the kangaroo's six jumps and the four jumps that the rabbit would have to make. Counting the difference between the two towers, the children agree quickly that the rabbit had already jumped two times.
Statement of Problem 5:
Eric washed 5 dishes. Eric washed 3 more dishes than Catherine. How many dishes did Catherine wash?
Statement of Problem 6:
The kangaroo jumps 6 times. If the rabbit jumps 4 more times, it will have jumped as many times as the kangaroo. How many times did the rabbit jump?
