Abstract

In the sixth of nine clips in a first grade classroom, four children: Stephanie, Gerardo, Sean and Aaron, revisit and reconsider their solution to Problem 5 of a set of 6 word problems involving addition and subtraction. Refer to clip 4 of the series for their initial work. Stephanie rereads the problem to the group, questioning whether their first answer of 5 is correct. Sean claims that the answer should be 5 plus 3 or 8. Others suggest that the answer should be 5 minus 3 or two. The children then question whether the answer might be six or three. Researcher Alston asks the childen to justify any of these solutions and reminds the group that they must agree. After some discussion, the children claim that the answer cannot be two because that is the answer for Problem 6. The researcher assures the children that two problems can have the same answer but that they must still come to agreement about Problem 5. All of the children then agree that the answer for Problem 5 is 2.

Eric washed 5 dishes. Eric washed 3 more dishes than Catherine. How many dishes did Catherine wash?
