DescriptionThere is a strong genetic component to asthma however, environmental and economic factors contribute. Persons living in low income, urban communities often dwell in inferior housing conditions. There is increased risk for exposure to a combination of indoor and outdoor environmental triggers that can exacerbate and possibly contribute to the cause of asthma. These communities tend to be disproportionately comprised of low-income minorities, thus their children experience higher rates of asthma related morbidity and mortality when compared to Caucasian children. Minority children in Newark, New Jersey are representative of this population.
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a one hour, home-based, asthma education program which included a home assessment for environmental asthma triggers and provision of a targeted remediation action plan. The program was offered to urban minority parents and caregivers in Newark, NJ with outcome goals of improved asthma knowledge, action to remediate identified triggers, and care seeking behaviors for asthma control. This project utilized a one group pretest-posttest design. A pretest was administered prior to the initiation of education to assess baseline asthma knowledge and an identical posttest was given upon completion of education. Follow up was performed 30 days post intervention to assess for environmental remediation and initiation of care seeking behaviors.
Participants showed improvement in all outcome measures with one exception in the area of remediation- there was no change from baseline to follow up in the presence of rodents. This project has demonstrated that a one hour, home-based, asthma education program with home assessment for environmental asthma triggers, and a targeted remediation action plan has the potential to improve asthma knowledge and care seeking behaviors for asthma control.
