Abstract (type = abstract)
Purpose of Project: The aim of this quality improvement project was to determine if a clinical decision support system electronic alert can improve immunization rates from baseline rates for hepatitis A and influenza vaccine in the pediatric population 6-24 months of age.
Methodology: To measure the project outcomes, a pre-and post-implementation design was used where chart audits for hepatitis A and Influenza vaccination rates were conducted prior to implementation of electronic alerts, as well as chart audits at one and two months after implementation.
Results: Data analysis results indicate at alpha level p < .05, there were no statistically significant differences in hepatitis A (p = .066) or Influenza (p = .841) pre-and post-immunization rates. Pre-and post-immunization rates, however, indicated there was an increase in percentage for hepatitis A immunization rate (11.11%). Further investigation is necessary before a conclusion can be made on the effectiveness of electronic alerts on immunization rates.
Implications for Practice: This quality improvement project may allow for decrease in barriers to immunization such as missed opportunities for vaccination in pediatric primary care and may be helpful in deciding which strategies could be useful in increasing immunization rates for other healthcare facilities/organizations/clinics.
