Purpose of Project: Anesthetic management of a patient is an art that cannot be delivered in just one fashion. There is a multitude of variants that come into play, from the patient’s medical history, medication regimen and current physical state. There is one more important aspect that is of note, and that is an individuals’ pharmacogenomics (PGx). Understanding this concept could lead to a better understanding of the patient’s genetic predispositions to medication metabolism. Anesthesia providers are lacking information and knowledge regarding pharmacogenomics and its utility in managing their patients.
Methodology: This study was a prospective, descriptive, multicohort design which examined the impact of a didactic educational presentation with use of a highly reliable survey set. The audience that we reached with this project were physician and nurse anesthesiologist as well as resident registered nurse anesthetists (RRNA). Offering an educational presentation to anesthesia providers regarding the utility of pharmacogenomics as well as how to interpret its results could lead to a better understanding and incorporation of pharmacogenomics into anesthetic practice.
Results: The ultimate aim was that anesthesia providers gain more awareness about pharmacogenomics and seek to educate themselves further on the topic in order to themselves incorporate it into their anesthetic practice. Upon analysis of the results it was found that anesthesia providers in deed recognized their lack of understanding and showed an overwhelming eagerness to learn more about pharmacogenomics as they noted this was important for patient care and outcomes.
Implications for Practice: Having providers who are educated and comfortable with PGx will lead to better and safer patient care in the future. Medicine is an ever-evolving field, and as providers we need to keep up with the new technologies and practices in order to offer our patients the safest and best care possible.
