DescriptionIn an alternate, post-environmental-catastrophe United States, young artist Clare Dunne is depressed, underpaid, and struggling to get by. But when she’s diagnosed with IMAS, an incurable and fatal disease, she’ll do anything to hold on to her life. A chance presents itself in the form of Mite Health, a biotech startup that offers Clare free treatment under one condition: she leave home to enroll in a clinical trial of an experimental animal-derived therapy. Though initially successful, the treatment comes with devastating side effects: most distressing is the thick grey fur that Clare and the other patients begin to sprout — and that’s just the beginning. Meanwhile, second-grade social outcast Estie is an animal-lover who hasn’t felt well for a while. As her symptoms progress, and she too is diagnosed with IMAS, her path becomes intertwined with Clare’s and the two become inextricably linked both to each other and the nonhuman world around them.
