TitleImplementation of a community partnership between a technical school and a four-year university with the intent to educate and train high school students on the role of a standardized patient
DescriptionPurpose of Project:
The purpose of this project is to implement a community partnership between a secondary technical school and a four-year university located in Newark, New Jersey. The intent is to develop a partnership between the two schools and to educate high school students on the role of a standardized patient.
Methodology:
The project utilized a descriptive quantitative design along with the PDSA framework. The project participants consisted of adolescents ages 14-17 from a secondary technical school in Newark, New Jersey. An educational presentation as well as a program evaluation tool were developed by co-investigator to educate participants and assess interest regarding becoming a pediatric standardized patient. Recruitment and implementation took place via virtual platform due to Covid 19 restrictions.
Results:
Results of this project indicated interest from project participants to become standardized patients in the future as well as the successful implementation of the community partnership.
Implications for Practice:
Through this community partnership, future pediatric nurse practitioner students can have more accessibility to OSCE experiences with standardized patients who are actually in the pediatric population. This will have a positive impact in critical thinking skills, communication and improve assessment skills in pediatric nurse practitioners.
