Abstract (type = abstract)
Background: Evidence-based clinical interventions, such as the Reach Out and Read (ROR) program, provide a framework that enables pediatric providers to improve and promote early childhood literacy. Age-appropriate children's books are distributed to each child at their well visit from ages 6 months through 5 years old. Then their provider gives anticipatory guidance and model to the caregiver on reading aloud to their child (Zuckerman & Augustyn, 2011).
Purpose: With the rapid transition to telemedicine with the recent COVID-19 pandemic, little information is known on how the ROR program can be effectively delivered through this new platform, prompting the need to assess the effectiveness of ROR via telemedicine.
Method: In this quality improvement (QI) initiative, secondary data from a survey distributed to pediatricians to identify barriers and areas for improving the ROR program via telemedicine was analyzed. Recommendations on best practices for implementing ROR using telemedicine were developed.
Results: Data analyzed from completed surveys found that 71% of respondents indicated the extreme importance of implementing the ROR program as part of telehealth visits during the COVID-19 crisis. Barriers to implementing ROR via telemedicine included book distribution being unavailable, technology restrictions, insufficient training, lack of awareness of telehealth options for modeling reading, and options for providing books to patients.
Implications: These findings drove quality improvement recommendations and initiatives. The research team identified and developed resources, including a ROR telemedicine tip sheet, an educational video for pediatricians on how to implement ROR via telemedicine, and a list of online books and literature resources. With these recommendations and resources, pediatricians can effectively deliver ROR, whether in the clinic or telemedicine.
