DescriptionThis study was a meta-analysis aimed to determine whether there was a quantitative difference in mean classification accuracy between two distinct methods used in determining cut scores for mental health screening systems. Search parameters were set to identify relevant screeners and classification criteria were developed to categorize mental health screeners into the “a priori” and “post hoc” groups. Once screeners were identified and categorized, the groups were compared, using a t-test of independent means, to determine whether the classification accuracy indices demonstrated significant differences between these two groups. This analysis was conducted for the total sample of screeners (n=180) as well as for a single-screener subsample (n=96) that had an additional inclusion criterion of only including one screener per research article. Results showed statistically significant differences between the two groups for the sensitivity index for both the total sample of screeners and the single-screener subsample. These results indicate that these two methods are distinct, and it is important to know the methodology of the cut score development whenever comparing the sensitivity levels between screeners.
