DescriptionBackground: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with elevated risk for nicotine dependence (ND), and both PTSD and smoking are more common among female survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) than the general population. However, little is known about the PTSD-ND association among female Hispanic survivors of IPV, including whether cultural variables moderate the PTSD-ND in this population. This study aimed to do the following: 1) replicate the PTSD-ND association in a sample of female Hispanic survivors of IPV, 2) examine the associations between ethnic discrimination, acculturation, birthplace, and ethnic identity on ND, and 3) examine whether ethnic discrimination, acculturation, birthplace, and ethnic identity moderated the PTSD-ND association among 356 female Hispanic survivors of intimate partner violence. Methods: Data was used from participants in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (Wave 2) who were female, Hispanic, and experienced intimate partner violence. Logistic regression was used to test the associations between PTSD, ethnic discrimination, acculturation, birthplace, and ethnic identity on ND and whether ethnic discrimination, acculturation, birthplace, and ethnic identity moderated the PTSD-ND association. Results: As hypothesized, the PTSD-ND association was magnified for participants who reported ethnic discrimination. The PTSD-ND association was also magnified for those who had higher acculturation, but that association was only approaching statistical significance (p<.10). Also, as hypothesized, the PTSD-ND association was mitigated for participants who were born outside the United States and who had a high ethnic identity. Although, the latter association did not reach statistical significance (p<.10). Study findings suggest the need for additional studies to understand how cultural factors affect the PTSD-ND association.
