DescriptionPurpose of Project: The purpose of this project was to evaluate if establishing relational continuity of care in a primary care/urgent care clinic by scheduling patients for follow-up visits with the same nurse practitioner for each encounter would increase patient satisfaction. Methodology: After being evaluated by a nurse practitioner in the clinic, patients who met the inclusion criteria for the study by requiring a follow-up visit within six weeks were asked to participate in the study. The participants were then asked to complete the Nursing Care Interpersonal Questionnaire. The participants were then scheduled and seen by the same nurse practitioner for their follow-up appointment within 6 weeks. After the follow-up appointment the participants were asked to complete the same questionnaire. Results: The findings from the study show that there was an improvement in satisfaction scores between the first and second survey and the sample provided sufficient evidence to conclude that the implementation of continuity of care did increase patient satisfaction. Implications for Practice: The implementation of continuity of care has the potential to increase patient satisfaction and improve patient outcomes, such as lowering healthcare costs, reducing errors and adverse events, improving quality of life, and decreasing the utilization of healthcare services. Although there is a need for more studies on the effects of continuity of care on patient satisfaction, providers should continue to encourage patients to develop trusting provider-patient relationships through having a designated primary care provider.
