DescriptionIn 2021, there were an estimated 84 million people displaced globally, including 26.6 million refugees and 4.4 million asylum seekers (UNHCR, 2022a). These numbers are only expected to rise in the coming months as war and humanitarian disasters continue to unravel and uproot people around the world. Despite these numbers, there is a dearth of literature on the experience of women who are refugees and asylum seekers who are pregnant and accessing maternal care services in the U.S. This dissertation study explored the intersection of migration, resettlement, pregnancy, and motherhood to shed light on the experience of refugees and asylum seekers as they access maternal care, the quality of care received, and the connection between physical and mental health. A review of the literature identified higher rates of obstetric complications and pronounced delays in access to prenatal care among refugees and asylum seekers, as well as other biopsychosocial factors relevant to maternal health outcomes for refugee women and women seeking asylum and their infants (Dopfer et al., 2018; Lui et al., 2014; Malebranche et al., 2017; Kandasamy et al., 2014). This study utilized a modified pragmatic case study approach in which three women were interviewed, using an in-depth format, and their qualitative responses were analyzed using grounded theory. What emerged was a contextualized appreciation for the meaning of pregnancy while fleeing for refuge, an exploration of barriers to care, a discussion of the connection between access to maternal care and mental health, and a recognition of the primacy of stability and practical support. Such findings provide recommendations for providers, including psychologists, to establish ethical, compassionate, and effective services for these women and their families. Implications for policy, advocacy, and future research are also discussed.
