DescriptionThe illicit trade in cultural property is a well-known issue that addresses objects that have been illegally exported out of source countries for the art market. Due diligence and proper provenance have long been cited as important factors for combatting this transnational crime, but a gray art market has long since ignored these measures for reducing the number of illicit objects in the market. This thesis analyzes antiquities trafficking networks, specifically those related to South Asian antiquities, the agents of trafficking, and the illicit market for antiquities. In doing so, it examines the role of art laundering that facilitates the sale of illegally obtained objects through the art market and looks at the policies that are currently in place to combat antiquities trafficking.
