Purpose of Project: This project aimed to evaluate implementation of the Keystones of Development within pediatric medical residency programs in New Jersey, to enhance pediatric medical resident education with the utilization of the Keystones of Development, and to improve the adoption of the Keystones of Developmentās pediatric residents in New Jersey
Methodology: Two sustainability surveys were electronically distributed to pediatric medical resident and faculty cohorts who had already completed the Keystones of Development curriculum for a previous study. Quantitative data were summarized to create evidence-based recommendations for New Jersey Pediatric Resident Advocacy Collaborative.
Results: Collectively, five resident and seven faculty cohorts completed the surveys for a total of 12 completed surveys. Analysis revealed that 80% (n=4) of pediatric medical resident cohorts found the Keystones of Development valuable in their training and stated that caregivers appreciated their advice. Of the resident cohorts, 40% (n=2) used the parenting handouts, and 20% (n=1) used the Keystones of Development summary sheets. Faculty cohorts indicated that 85.7% (n=6) found Keystones of Development to be a valuable addition to residency training, and 71.4% (n=5) of faculty cohorts believed caregivers appreciated residents' advice. Additionally, 42.9% (n=3) of faculty cohorts were comfortable using the resident summary sheets and reinforcing the Keystones of Development curriculum in clinical practice, and 28.6% (n=2) of faculty cohorts used the parenting handouts provided.
Implications for Practice: Improving the integration of the Keystones of Development within pediatric medical resident education for the future will provide pediatricians with training that will combine positive parenting advice and early childhood development within pediatric primary care.
