DescriptionObjective: Development of an updated evidence-based Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) crisis simulation video to provide Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) and anesthesia providers with a tool that bridges the gap between knowledge and clinical practice.
Background: MH may have a rapid or insidious onset with varying signs and symptoms. Anesthesia providers should be well-versed on the presentation of MH to initiate immediate treatment. Current literature demonstrates an immense deficiency regarding basic MH knowledge among anesthesia providers which supports the need for a readily available updated MH audiovisual aid.
Study Design/Methods: A quantitative experimental research design was used to conduct this study. Pre-video simulation, surveys were completed to assess baseline MH knowledge. Following initial viewing of the updated MH simulation video, surveys were administered assessing the efficacy and knowledge retention obtained from the MH crisis simulation video. Incorporation of the video into the Rutgers University DNP Anesthesia Program curriculum and social media educational YouTube platform serves as a supplemental resource.
Conclusion: The video provided anesthesia providers and SRNAs with current MH standards of care which resulted in subjects being well versed on the presentation of MH and subsequent treatment.
