DescriptionBackground: Hepatitis C, a viral borne disease, affects between 3 to 4 million people in the United States. Although some people carry the hepatitis C virus without their knowledge or any ill effects, the disease can be life-threatening, progressing to chronic hepatitis C (CHC), cirrhosis, or liver cancer. New treatments, such as oral, Direct Acting Antiviral (DAA) non-interferon based (non-INF) treatments can positively address these issues, but they can also lead to untoward symptoms that can affect patients’ health related quality of life (HRQOL).

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to explore the effectiveness of telephone counseling, perceived treatment-related symptoms, and the HRQOL of patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) before, during and after treatment of oral DAA non IFN treatments.

Method: Data from the SF 36 were collected using the Statistical Package of Social Sciences (SPSS). A t-test was used for analysis to compare data from the first administered with the second, which showed a comparison of HRQOL at the beginning and end of the study, that is, before and after telephone counseling. Data collected from the de novo survey that ascertained treatment-related symptoms were individually assessed before, during, and after completion of the regimen treatment. Non-parametric Friedman's ANOVA procedures were conducted to determine whether symptom severity changed across time using mean ranks.

Findings: Telephone counseling had a positive influence on symptoms management and improvement in participants' HRQOL. Statistical analyses showed that reduction in fatigue and headache scoring at the end of the treatment promoted a higher quality of life in patients with hepatitis C. There was improvement in bodily pain, functional activities increased with the corresponding reduction in severity of headache and depression, and in some cases a full resolution of symptoms of fatigue.
Conclusions: Telephone counseling had a positive influence on symptoms management and improvement in participants' HRQOL. The results of this project showed that telephone counseling helped participants to achieve better well-being through the management of treatment related symptoms and recognize the benefits and barriers that block the change in behavior
